Form friction

Anything in a form that makes it harder or less appealing to complete, such as too many fields, unclear labels or a vague submit button.

Form friction is the effort, confusion or worry a visitor feels when filling in a form. Each extra field, unclear label, required phone number, error message or vague button adds a little more resistance, and at some point the visitor decides the reward is not worth it and leaves.

The main sources of friction are easy to spot. Asking for information you do not need at this stage, such as company size or budget on a simple quote request, increases effort. Required fields that feel intrusive, like a phone number for a free download, increase worry. Poor design, such as tiny inputs on mobile, placeholder text used as labels, or errors that clear the whole form, increases frustration. A submit button that says Submit tells the visitor nothing about what happens next.

Reducing friction does not always mean using the fewest possible fields. Sometimes extra questions qualify leads and save sales time, and longer forms can work well when the reward is high. The aim is to ask only for what you need now, explain why you need anything sensitive, and make the form easy to finish. Multi-step forms that start with easy questions can also feel lighter than one long form, because people who have started are more likely to finish.

How to improve it

  • Remove any field you do not use in the next step of your process.
  • Estimate the effort of your form with the free form friction calculator (open tool).
  • Replace Submit with a button that describes the result, such as Send my quote request.
  • Make phone number optional unless you genuinely need to call, and explain why if you ask.
  • Put a privacy note and a short reassurance line next to the button.
  • Test the form on a phone, including error messages and autofill.
